Preview Review: N3ON City RUMBLE

Recently I was given the opportunity to check out an upcoming new game on Kickstarter. I received a copy of the rules and a print and play version of the game. This is my thoughts and opinions on the presented materials. Enjoy!

N3ON City Rumble is a game by Davy Wagnarok, published by DO Competitive Entertainment. It is for 2 players. In this game, players will be competing in a 5-on-5 tag team combat simulation in a classic 80’s and 90’s arcade game style. The player that is best able to defeat all of their opponents fighters will be declared the winner.

I’m not going to get really involved in how to play the game. If you want to check out the rules, you can do so at the link below.

The game itself boasts over 50 unique items and 20 fighters to choose from, with more available to be unlocked through the stretch goals. The game tends to remind me of the collectible card game Overpower. Players will vie to take out the other player’s fighters by using brightly colored brawl cards and super charged super powered moves through the use of N3ON cards. The N3ON cards have a Pokemon style of play. One type of power overtakes another. For example, Rage will cancel out Cosmo. Item cards are like action cards and can be used to do things like draw more cards or replenish health. All of the battling continues until one of the player’s last fighter has been Knocked Out. When that happens, the game is over and the winner is crowned.

From what I looked at, the board and cards all look like they been pulled from the old classic video game, Streets of Rage. I’m thoroughly impressed with the graphics and design of everything. The game will come with over 150 cards. I really like the feel of everything here and the theme really stands out. There will also be 10 colored dice included, 5 red and 5 blue. Even with prototype images, the game looks fantastic. I can only imagine how much better the finished product will look. The individual character cards will each have a unique back that showcases that character. I’m really excited to see the artwork for these. Looks to be really cool.

The rulebook is full color with lots of bright pictures. The theme comes through in the rulebook just as well as it does in the game. Everything is really easy to read through and understand. It looks well put together and the concepts of playing the game flow easily from one part to another. I’m really impressed with the look and feel of the rules. I’d say that this will be a great compliment to the game.

Setup for this game appears to be fairly simple. It mainly consists of shuffling the different decks of cards, choosing characters and drawing cards to your hand. Nothing simpler than that. As I stated earlier, I really got a feel of Overpower and Pokemon. Having been an avid fan of Overpower, this really looks right up my alley. The game looks really simple to play. I saw nothing that looked like it would cause any concern as far as gameplay. I like the N3ON abilities and how they can be used even during your opponents turn. Looks to me like these will be real game changers when your about to get your rear end handed to you. I’m just really impressed with how much the feel of Streets of Rage or Street Fighter comes through. This just looks killer and I’m really intrigued.

N3ON City Rumble is a light to medium game of 5-on-5 combat full of neon goodness. I would say that anyone who is a fan of classic video games like Streets of Rage or Street Fighter will love the art and feel of the game. Fans of Overpower and even Pokemon will love the combat oriented gameplay. The game has a really professional feel to it, even though it’s not coming from a major game company. I’m impressed with the art and mechanics of the game. Everything seems really well thought out. There’s still a ways to go for the Kickstarter campaign to be funded. With only a couple of weeks left, now’s the time to back what should really be a great game. I highly recommend jumping in on this one now.
