Crappy Birthday Review

Since today is my birthday, I thought that I would choose an appropriate game to review today. I hope you enjoy it!

Crappy Birthday is a game designed by Brian and Amy Weinstock, published by North Star Games, LLC. It is for 3-8 players. In this game, players will be giving humorous birthday gifts to the other players. The best and worst gifts will get points. The player that can best judge what would be the best or worst gifts for the other players will be declared the winner.

To begin, all the cards are shuffled together. Each player is then dealt a hand of 5 gift cards each. One player is chosen to be the Birthday Judge for that round. The other players are the gift givers. The game can now begin.

On a player’s turn, they will choose one of their gift cards to give to the Birthday Judge. They will do this by placing the card face down on the table. Once everyone has given a gift card, the Birthday Judge takes all of the played cards and mixes them up. He then places them face up on the table one at a time and reads the card out loud. Everyone can then talk about the gifts and which they think are good or crappy. After a suitable period of time has passed, the Birthday Judge chooses the gift the like the most and the one they like the least. The player that gave those particular gifts take back those winning cards and place them in front of them to keep track of score. Each card placed this way counts as 1 point. The cards that were not chosen are discarded and everyone draws back up to 5 gift cards. The player to the Birthday Judge’s left becomes the new Birthday Judge. This continues until one player reaches 5 points. The first player to do that is the winner.

The game comes in a big green box that looks like a birthday present. Inside the box is a stack of oversized cards. Seriously, these things are big. They make me think of the cards in Dixit or Last Letter. They’re a little bit difficult to shuffle, especially if you have small hands. The artwork is hilarious. I love the humor on them. There are so many funny pictures and captions on each one. I really get a kick out of the cards and I really like them.

The rulebook fits neatly inside the top of the box and really has more pages in it than it really needed. Most of the book is filled with ads for other games. One page gives a little bit of history behind the designers. There are only like 3 pages that are actually used for the game. However, if you read this review than you really don’t have any need for the rules. The game is that simple. I do like that there is some really nice artwork throughout the book. This is true for all the North Star Games products that I’ve seen. I like the designer page. It’s a really neat way of putting a face to the games. All said, the rules are so easy to read and there’s nothing difficult to understand. That’s the beauty of these games.

The game itself is tons of fun and will make you laugh uncontrollably. The cards themselves will have you chuckling but the conversations that come out of these cards is what will leave your sides sores from laughing so much. The game is really simple to play. It’s something that even smaller children can play. They might not be able to read the cards but they can understand the pictures. It has some of the humor of a game like Apples to Apples or Snake Oil but the funny pictures puts it over the top for me. This game is huge on player interaction like any good party game will be. The best part is the discussion about the gifts after everyone’s gift has been read aloud. I think this is definitely a great party game.

Crappy Birthday is a light party game of hilarious gift giving. The game doesn’t take all that long to play. It mainly depends on how long you take laughing and discussing the gift cards. It can be played in as little as 15-20 minutes. It’s a lot of fun and is sure to make everyone laugh. The cards are a little bit big but they work. There’s a lot of good natured fun to be had with this game. It’s a very good party game and one that I highly recommend, especially for a birthday party. Everyone will enjoy this game, especially the kids. It’s really simple and easy to play. Now, blow out the candles and wish for a Crappy Birthday!
