The Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords – Spires of Xin-Shalast Adventure Deck Review

xin1

The Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords – Spires of Xin-Shalast Adventure Deck is published by Paizo Publishing. It adds new locations, monsters, villains, items and 5 new scenarios that make up the Spires of Xin-Shalast adventure path. This is based on the Pathfinder RPG adventure of the same name. Players will complete their Rise of the Runelords set with this final adventure deck. In it they will be forced to confront cannibal spirits, champions of a fallen empire before facing off for the climactic battle against the Runelord of Greed.

For how to play, check out the base game review here.

COMPONENTS
This expansion adds the last 110 card expansion to the base game. Included inside the box are some really great looking cards, much like the previous adventure decks. The game has some fearsome monsters like the frost worm as well as skulking vampires and abominable snowmen. Seriously, you could be fighting a sasquatch….a Sasquatch! Maybe the gang from “Finding Bigfoot” should have simply picked up this deck. In any case, the artwork is great. As with previous decks, the cards are a little larger than the base set. That’s not a problem and it’s not a big deal. It’s simply something that should be noted.

RULEBOOK
There is no rulebook included with this expansion. All rules needed to play are provided in the base game.

GAMEPLAY
In this climactic battle of wits, this adventure deck leaves nothing to the imagination. As I said earlier, they threw everything in this deck including Bigfoot. Pretty much everything has been building to this deck and you better hope that your characters are ready. There will be no turning back and no surrender. You will face some really tough villains and henchmen. However if you’re able to muster through the scenarios, you’ll have a real sense of accomplishment. I didn’t quite make it through on my first go but that’s ok. It gave me the opportunity to try again. There is definitely a lot of fun to be had here, even when you lose. That makes this a great addition for me.

OVERALL
The Spires of Xin-Shalast Adventure Deck is a great addition to a already great expanding and customizable game. These are some of the toughest scenarios and the hardest villains and henchmen that you will face. Trust me though, it’s well worth it. Fans of the base game will definitely enjoy this and will feel a sense of completion when they get through it. The artwork is great once more and really make this a great end to a super game. I highly recommend it and I look forward to Paizo’s next great adventure card game.
